French win Commodore's Cup
COWES, Isle of Wight, England -- The France Red team won the Rolex Commodores' Cup in Cowes in convincing fashion with 62.5 points clear of the Netherlands. The three-boat team posted the best score in the final short inshore race on Sunday to consolidate their position in the nine-race regatta with a mixture of inshore and offshore racing. Thirty-three boats representing 11 national teams entered the event. Throughout the regatta, the France Red team has sailed confidently and with precision, led by former winner of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Yacht of the Year trophy Courrier Nord, a production IMX-40, skippered by Gery Trentesaux which was the top scoring yacht in the series.
Courrier Nord was consistently supported by another IMX-40, Eric Fries' Fastwave 3 and the Danish built cruiser/racer X-442, Clin d'il of Jean-Yves le Goff. On the final race, Clin D'Oeil was second, Fastwave 3 fourth and Courrier Nord ninth demonstrating the strength of this French team. "I'm racing my own boat... it's my pleasure to steer her," said Trentesaux, emphasising that he is an owner-driver who does not need to employ a professional helmsman. "We were surprised to win, and we were surprised it was so easy. We thought the England Red and Wales teams would be good, as we were impressed by the speed of the Farr 52s.'
